Fatric Bewong
Fatric Bewong is an artist and educator who lives and works in Accra. Her interdisciplinary practice traverses the studio, the classroom, and the field. She studied at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in 2006 where she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art Degree (BFA) and Master of Fine Art (MFA) degree from the University of Hartford, Connecticut in 2019. Bewong sculpts with reused materials and sound improvisation with the intention to revalue them as formal objects which are colourful and plentiful yet sublime in potentials on large scales and varied scopes. Through photographs and video of herself dressed under the guise of Mother Earth (it is symbolic of the environment from which life thrives), she re-contextualises traditional Ghanaian proverbs to open up dialogues and discussions on class systems, labor, love, healing, self-care and self-actualization.
She believes that art can re-tell our present-day story by insisting on deep generosity and reciprocity through maintenance, reuse and revaluing of the things some cultures have deemed valueless. She has been exhibited in her home country Ghana, the USA and Europe. She has participated in recent exhibitions such as Collecting the City #2, Amsterdam Museum, 2022 Air in Zuidoost, Amsterdam 2022 and ‘if we are happy in our dreams, does that count?’ Ifa Gallery, Stuttgart, 2022.
